PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk apparatus in which preamble areas of data sectors are reduced and storage capacity is increased. SOLUTION: The magnetic disk apparatus adopts a data surface servo system. In a magnetic disk, main preambles 21a, 21b are written in the frequency of a data clock. Respective data sectors 19a to 19f are recorded by a write clock synchronized with signals obtained by reproducing the main preambles 21a, 21b. Respective data sectors 19a to 19f include sub-preambles 22a to 22f. In the case of reproducing these recorded data sectors 19a to 19f, a read clock is synchronized by using the signal obtained by each main preamble and a signal obtained by reproducing the sub-preamble belonging to the data sector concerned with the reproduction of the main preamble. The bit length of each sub-preamble is shorter than that of a conventional preamble to be used for independently synchronizing a clock and an area obtained by totalizing the main preambles 21a, 21b and the sub-preambles 22a to 22f is narrower than an area obtained by totalizing conventional preambles.
