<p>As compared with the case where PM removal and sulfur removal are carried out for each catalyst control demand in each exhaust system, a reduction in the number of times of regeneration to prevent a deterioration in fuel consumption caused by PM removal and sulfur removal can be realized by controlling the removal of PM or sulfur in the whole exhaust system in identical treatment independently of the state of a catalyst disposed in each exhaust system (exhaust passages 13L,13R). Further, in the removal and control of PM, the amount of the embers of PM is brought to zero by carrying out PM removal based on a catalyst having the lowest catalyst bed temperature in a plurality of catalysts. Further, regarding the control of sulfur removal, the sulfur component can be satisfactorily removed while minimizing a thermal deterioration in the catalyst by carrying out the removal of sulfur based on the average of catalyst bed temperatures for a plurality of catalysts.</p> |
