Fanfold filter element (16) has filtering media pleats (20) with central planes (CP') canted at a predetermined angle (C) relative to a reference plane (P') such that the depth (28) of each pleat is greater than the depth (29) of a mounting frame (32) to increase effective filtering area. Installed filter members (30, 30') are canted by corresponding angles (A1, A2) so that central planes (CP') of the pleats (20) are aligned with the direction of incoming fluid flow (53).
