PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix a light emitting element for setting in higher accuracy the height of emitting position and the emitting direction of the light emitting element. SOLUTION: In a submount substrate 2; a MID3 is formed in the structure that a recessed area 31 is formed at the external side of a flat substrate supporting surface 30, a projected wall 32 is formed higher than the substrate supporting surface 30 along the external circumferential edge of the recessed area 31, and a laser chip 1 is mounted on the substrate supporting surface 30. At the internal surface of the recessed area 31, a circuit pattern 36 is formed but the circuit pattern 36 is not formed to the substrate supporting surface 30. The recessed area 31 is filled with a conductive paste 4 in the manner that the paste is in contact with the circumferential part of the bottom surface of the submount substrate 2. Moreover, a fillet 40 in which the conductive paste 4 is deposited like a mound is formed to a space between the side surface of the submount substrate 2 and the internal wall surface of the projected wall 32.
