Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0475160/IV/1> where R is hydroxyl or --NR<1>--CH2CH2OH, R<1> is hydrogen or --CH2CH2OH and R<11> is hydrogen or methyl, are manufactured by condensing resorcinol or orcinol with hydroxyethylamines. The reaction may be effected by heating orcinol with mono- or diethanolamine to 120--180 DEG C., advantageously in an enclosed pan fitted with a stirrer and a short air-cooled condenser until moisture is no longer evolved. By using excess of the ethanolamine and a higher temperature, both hydroxyl groups of the orcinol or resorcinol may be replaced by hydroxyethylamino groups. Examples describe the condensation of orcinol with diethanolamine and resorcinol with monoethanolamine. The Provisional Specification refers to the manufacture of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0475160/IV/2> or <FORM:0475160/IV/3> where R, R<1> and R<11> are organic radicles or hydrogen.
