SYNTHESIS OF CARBON NANOTUBES AND/OR NANOFIBRES ON A POLYMER SUBSTRATE

The method provides for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes and/or nanofibres on the surface of a polymer substrate selected from the group consisting of polybenzoxazoles, polybenzimidazoles, polyimides, polyaramides and mixtures thereof. The method comprises the steps of: depositing on the surface of the substrate at least one metal belonging to one of groups Ib to VIIIb of the Periodic Table of Elements, which metal has catalytic properties- with respect to the formation and development of the carbon nanotubes and/or nanofibres, and placing the substrate in contact with a gas comprising a component the molecule of which contains at least one carbon atom, at a temperature of between 400 and 9000C, so as to bring about the synthesis of the carbon nanotubes and/or nanofibres on the surface of the polymer substrate.
