A belt-type continuous variable transmission in which a V-belt (3) formed by connecting a plurality of elements by a belt is passed over a pair of pulleys (1, 2) with grooves having a V-shaped cross-section and variable widths. In at least one of contact surfaces each located between each of the pulleys (1, 2) and the set of the elements, there is provided a diffusion layer (8) in which Zn is diffused in a raw material surface layer of metal of the pulleys (1, 2) or the elements, and the diffusion layer (8) contains S and P. High friction coefficient and anti-abrasion characteristics can be maintained for a long period, so that the belt has sufficient performance for high-output applications.
