The combination of nitric oxide generating compounds which are not depend ent upon aldehyde dehydrogenase for bioactivation, or are specifically targe ted to nNOS or the sarcoplasmic reticulum of cardiac muscle cells, and xanth ine oxidase inhibitors are effective in the treatment of heart disease, spec ifically congestive heart failure and ischemic coronary disease. This treatm ent is particularly effective in patients who have particularly heavy oxidat ive burdens, e.g. diabetics, patients with lung disorders, patients with sic kle cell anemia and patients of Asian descent.
