The preparation of alpha , beta -unsaturated keto compounds (I) by base-catalyzed aldol condensation of 1-15C aldehyde and/or ketone compounds (II) is carried out by: (i) subjecting (II) to adiabatic reaction with aqueous catalyst solution; and (ii) subjecting the obtained reaction mixture to brief distillation to give a head product containing water and (II) and a sump product containing (I) and aqueous catalyst solution.
