An LCD capable of controlling a viewing angle, and an electronic device using the same are provided to control a viewing angle to a wide viewing angle and a narrow viewing angle by setting a liquid crystal layer to a retardation value allowing a phase difference of a multiplication of 1/2 wavelength to inclined transmission light of a direction inclined at a predetermined angle to a reference line of a substrate surface when a voltage that aligns liquid crystal molecules in an inclined direction with respect to the reference line is impressed. An image display panel(11) includes a viewing side substrate(12) and an opposite substrate(13) facing each other, with a cell gap therebetween, a first electrode(14) and a second electrode(15) installed at at least one side of an inner surface of the substrates facing each other, and forming a plurality of pixels, a liquid crystal layer(17) formed between the viewing side substrate and the opposite substrate, and a pair of polarizers(18,19) disposed with the viewing side substrate and the opposite substrate therebetween. The image display panel(11) controls light transmission for each of the pixels by voltage application according to image data to the first and second electrodes, and displays an image. The liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates(22,23) disposed at an outer side of one polarizer of the image display panel, which face each other with a cell gap therebetween, electrodes installed at inner surfaces of the substrates facing each other, and a liquid crystal layer formed between the pair of substrates, and having liquid crystal molecules aligned in the same state. The liquid crystal layer allows a phase difference of a multiplication of 1/2 wavelength with respect to inclined transmission light of a direction inclined at a predetermined angle to a reference line of a substrate surface when a voltage that aligns liquid crystal molecules at an inclined direction with respect to the reference line is impressed. A viewing angle control panel(21) is disposed outside the liquid crystal device, and includes a viewing angle control polarizer disposed to have an optical axis parallel to an optical axis of a polarizer of the image display panel.
