PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error detection and error correction architecture and method used for data transmission in which required complexity and costs can be effectively reduced and software performance during decoding can be effectively improved. SOLUTION: In the present architecture, data bits to be transmitted are first encoded by a generation polynomial and a resultant parity bit is set after the data bits and sent out together. These parity bit and data to be transmitted comprise a packet as a transmission unit. When a receiving side receives this packet via a transmitter channel, the packet is checked using a parity bit checker. If it is judged that no error is contained in the parity bit in this check, decoding processing is not performed with respect to the received packet but if it is judged that any error is contained in the parity bit, the received packet is sent to a decoder and decoded further.
