PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device and a recording method capable of automatically specifying the kind of a recording medium and eliminating any operational mistakes of setting the paper kind by a user by automatically setting the paper kind with a simple and inexpensive configuration. SOLUTION: The recording device comprises first detection means 32, 33, 34 for detecting the width of a recording medium 1, a second detection means 4 for detecting the surface characteristic of the recording medium, a first determination means for determining to which of a plurality of groups the width belongs, a second determination means for determining to which of a plurality of groups the surface characteristic belongs, and a fourth determination means for determining the kind of the recording medium by comparing the results of determination of the first and second determination means with the combination table of the size and the surface characteristic of the recording medium.
