Disclosed herein a herbal anticancer agent comprising the extract of plant Sphaeranthus indicus<I/>or group of compounds obtained from the plant Sphaeranthus indicus. The present invention also discloses a pharmaceutical composition comprising the said agent, methods for preparing the composition and methods of treating all kinds of cancer in mammals including human beings. The methods of making the plant extract, methods for obtaining the active constituents are also dealt with.
