The web of fabric to be steamed and smoothed in accordance with the process described in the parent Specification is moistened, in order to shrink it, by wetting the travelling apron h by a wetting device placed in its path in front <PICT:0476102/IV/1> of the part where the fabric k travelling to the drum a comes into contact with it, so that moisture is transferred thereby to the fabric. The wetting device may comprise a roller 2 dipping into liquid in a trough 3, and intermittently rotated by a pawl 9 and ratchet teeth 8, the pawl being mounted on a lever 5 rotatable on the axle 4 of the roller 2 and having a roller 6 at its free end which is engaged by a cam 7 on the axle of the feed roller i<1>. Alternatively, the roller 2 may be rotated by friction with the apron h.
