<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve quality of exiting light beams being propagated in a waveguide of an optical element which uses a ridge type waveguide. <P>SOLUTION: The optical element is provided with: a first substrate to which optical polishing is conducted; a second substrate which is pasted onto the first substrate, a ridge waveguide 103 which is formed on the surface of the first substrate; and a scattering section 104 which is located in the vicinity of the region adjacent to the ridge waveguide. Thus, leaked light beams to a slab section 113 of the light beams propagated in the ridge section are scattered, the leaked light beams which are propagated to the exiting section are reduced. When the light beams emitted from the ridge waveguide are converged, sub-beams are sufficiently made small compared with the main beams and deterioration in the beam quality is suppressed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
