PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a vehicle capable of smoothly controlling gear shift by using demand driving force as parameter. SOLUTION: This controller 80 for the vehicle is provided with a storage part 85 for storing gear shift line information for determining gear shift among gear stages of an automatic transmission and a gear shift control part 84 for deciding a gear stage by referring to gear shift line information and controlling gear shift of the automatic transmission based on a value equivalent to vehicle speed and a value equivalent to demand driving force. The gear shift line information includes a first group of gear shift lines (a main group of gear shift lines) for prescribing demand driving force converted based on a change gear ratio at a gear stage before gear shift and a second group of gear shift lines (a sub-group of gear shift lines) for prescribing demand driving force converted based on a change gear ratio at a gear stage after gear shift. The gear shift control part 84 determines effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the first group of gear shift lines based on the results of comparison of the second group of gear shift lines with the value equivalent to vehicle speed and the value equivalent to demand driving force and decides a gear shift gear stage based on a gear shift line in the first group of gear shift lines determining its effectiveness.
