PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device for enabling selection without increasing a circuit scale. SOLUTION: There are provided: a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements for performing photoelectric conversion; a maximum detection circuit for detecting the maximum signal from the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements; an amplification means for amplifying the output of the photoelectric conversion elements for outputting; a selection means for selecting the output of the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements; and a connection means for connecting the output of the photoelectric conversion element selected by the selection means to the maximum detection circuit and an amplifier circuit. The selection method in a selecting means is allowed to differ between the detection of the maximum by the maximum detection circuit and the acquisition of an image signal by outputting signals successively from the photoelectric conversion element by the amplification means, thus using the selection means for both of the detection of the maximum and the reading of the image signal.
