A plastic knob body(2) is at least partly covered by a visible real wood veneer(11) and a wood sub-veneer(10) lies between the outer real wood veneer and the knob body. A varnish coating(12) covers the outer visible side of the real wood veneer. An adhesive layer(9) and an adhesion-enhancing coupling layer joins the knob body to the sub-veneer(10). The knob body forms a hand grip and connecting piece to a gear lever and an additional front part(7) is connected to the body. An independent claim is included for a method for covering a plastic gear knob body with real wood veneer in which a knob body(2) is injection molded in plastic, a sub-veneer(10) is applied onto the body and a real wood outer veneer is pressed onto the sub-veneer. A varnish layer is then applied over the entire outer face of the real wood veneer.
