PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically transparent gas-barrier material usable under high-temperature conditions exceeding 350°C and thus usable for leak prevention at production line piping junctions and the diaphragms of batteries and/or electrolyzers, etc., in various chemical industry sectors, and to provide a gas-barrier method using the gas-barrier material. SOLUTION: The gas-barrier material is obtained by the following process: A layered inorganic compound singly or the layered inorganic compound and a small amount of an additive are dispersed or dissolved in water or a liquid as water-based dispersion medium to prepare a homogeneous inorganic layered compound dispersion, which is left at rest to sediment inorganic layered compound particles, and the liquid as the dispersion medium is separated by a solid/liquid separatory means, thus forming the particles in membrane. This gas-barrier material thus obtained consists of a self-standing membrane where the laminate of the particles is highly aligned. Another version of this gas-barrier material consists of a laminate thereof. Any of these gas-barrier materials is usable as a covering material for pipings and flat plate members.
