The device has a light modulator (4) with a number of lines of light modulated cells (8, 8a, 8b). A position sensor produces a relative movement between the modulator and a light sensitive material, such that the movement is perpendicular to the lines of the cells. An inactivating device (10) is provided for inactivating the predetermined number of cells. The modulator is operated by loading data pattern on only the activated cells.
