<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit wherein uniformity of luminance distribution of light emitted from the emission surface of the backlight unit (a surface light source) for a liquid crystal display is enhanced. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight unit has a plurality of diffraction grating cells each having a diffraction grating on the emission surface or/and the surface opposed to the emission surface of a light guide plate and a plurality of light scattering cells each having a light scattering element on the emission surface or/and the surface opposed to the emission surface of the light guide plate. The diffraction grating cells and the light diffusion cells have different areas and are disposed according to respective unique periodicity. The areas of both diffraction grating cells and the light diffusion cells are changed and respective disposition periods, disposition positions and the number of disposition are independently set.
