PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital broadcast receiver in which a function required to be available can be provided continuously even to a third person while protecting internally stored personal information or private information properly even if the receiver is used by a plurality of users or when a third person operates the receiver. SOLUTION: The digital broadcast receiver comprises a means for registering each user in correspondence with a use level, a means 16 for authenticating the user, and a means 20 for controlling the receiver to operate in a personal authentication mode or an all-user common mode. When the user authentication means 16 performs user authentication in the personal authentication mode, the control means 20 grants the permission of using a function dependent on the use level of the user. In case of the all user common modes, use permission dependent on a specified use level is granted, and the release of the all-user common mode is permitted when a user registered with a first use level is authenticated but the release of the all-user common mode is not accepted when the other user is authenticated.
