The invention relates to a device for fermenting biomass (1), comprising a tank (2) with a bottom (3), a peripheral wall (4) closed on all sides and a roof (5), a disk-like, up and downward movable mixing member (9) accommodated inside the tank at a distance from the peripheral wall, and drive means (11) for moving the mixing member upward. The drive means are herein arranged on or in the bottom of the tank and support the mixing member. The drive means can comprise one or more hydraulic jacks (12) connected to the mixing member. The drive means can be further adapted to urge the mixing member downward. For this purpose the hydraulic jacks can operate in two directions, or the drive means can comprise one or more screw spindles connected to the mixing member.
