<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that prevents degradation in an image during conveyance and achieves high image quality by keeping the fixed conveyance speed of a recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with: a first image carrying unit 20 to carry a first image on a first image carrying belt 21; a second image carrying unit 30 to carry a second image on a second image carrying belt 31; a first transfer station including a first transfer means 46 to transfer the first and second images onto the first surface of a recording material P; a second transfer station including a second transfer means 47 to transfer images onto the second surface of the recording material; a recording material conveyance path 43A including carrying means 42A, 45 or the like to supply and convey a recording material between the first and second transfer stations; a conveying means 50 to convey the recording material exiting the second image carrying unit 30 to a heating and fixing device 60; and the heating and fixing device 60 to fix images on both surfaces.
