PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device, such as a liquid crystal display device of a lateral electric field system whose manufacturing processes are relatively simple and whose manufacturing cost is low. SOLUTION: The electro-optical device of the present invention is characterized in that a nonlinear element (TFD element 43) which has a lower electrode 44, an upper face insulating film 45 which covers the upper face of the lower electrode 44, a side face insulating film 46 which covers side faces of the lower electrode 44 and which has film thickness thinner than that of the upper face insulating film 45 and an upper electrode 47 which is provided at parts opposed to the side faces of the lower electrode 44 through the side face insulating film 46, and a common electrode 42a, and a pixel electrode 48 which is connected electrically to the upper electrode 47 of the nonlinear element and which generates a lateral electric field between the common electrode are provided on one of a pair of substrates.
