PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polythiophene bearing heteroatom-containing substituents and having such characteristics as to enable itself to effect high self-integration and form precise layer structure. SOLUTION: The polythiophene is composed of recurring units of formula(I), being≥1,000 in number-average molecular weight and 1.0-1.8 in Mw/Mn (Mw is weight-average molecular weight and Mn is number-average molecular weight). In formula(I), R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each H or a substituent bearing at least one functional group containing heteroatom(s), wherein at least one of R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>groups is the above substituent or R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are joined together to form a ring bearing at least one functional group containing heteroatom(s).
