ALKALINE BATTERY SEPARATOR AND ALKALINE PRIMERY BATTERY

An alkaline battery separator comprising an alkali-resistant synthetic fiber, a fibrillated solvent-spun cellulose fiber having a CSF (Canadian standard freeness) of 10 to 280ml, and a mercerized pulp having a CSF of 550ml or above, wherein the contents of the alkali-resistant synthetic fiber, the fibrillated solvent-spun cellulose fiber and the mercerized pulp are 25 to 62 % by mass, 5 to 25 % by mass, and 33 to 50 % by mass respectively based on the whole separator (with the proviso that the total amount is 100 % by mass). The alkali-resistant synthetic fiber may be a polyvinyl alcohol fiber having a mean single-fiber fineness of 1 dtex or below and the separator may further contain a polyvinyl alcohol binder in an amount of 3 to 20 % by mass based on the whole separator. The separator exhibits an area shrinkage of 3.5% or below as determined after 24-hour immersion at 80°C in a 40% by mass aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and may have a nerve of 2N or above.
