The invention relates to the use of high-frequency radio waves in order to enable a user to select an electronic device remotely from several devices that are present simultaneously and physically close, by performing simple operations consisting in designating the device to be selected with a device having a standard, reduced-size appearance, such as that of a remote control or a personal assistant (known as a PDA). The inventive system employs a user device which is equipped with a significantly-directional antenna for communicating selectively with the different controlled devices from which the user wishes to designate one device. In addition, said device enables the user to browse through a list of pre-selected controlled devices in order to designate the controlled device that he/she wishes to select. Typically, the list is browsed using a device that displays the list of pre-selected controlled devices and keys that can be used to select an element from the list.
