PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex having high chemical stability and excellent in wet stickiness resistance, adhesive strength in paper coating, and mechanical stability of a coating liquid when used for a pigment binder in paper coating, a carpet backing agent, an adhesive, a pressure-sensitive adhesive, a fiber binder, a coating material, and the like. SOLUTION: The copolymer latex is obtained by emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture as described below in the presence of at least one compound selected from alkali salts of ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acids. The amount of an unreacted compound A remaining in the copolymer latex is 5 mass% or less relative to a nonvolatile component in the copolymer latex. The monomer mixture comprises (a) 20-80 mass% of a conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.5-10 mass% of an unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, (c) 3-50 mass% of a vinyl cyanide monomer, and (d) 0-76.5 mass% of other copolymerizable monomers, wherein (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)=100 mass%.
