PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device with a small body even if two or more functions are added, and to provide a control method of the portable electronic device. SOLUTION: A portable telephone device 100 includes a magnetism detecting module 14 equipped with a first magnetic sensor 14a and a second magnetic sensor 14b for detecting earth magnetism; a control unit 18 for subjecting an output signal from the magnetism detecting module 14 to A/D conversion, and generating a digital signal; a memory unit 17 for storing the digital signal to a data table in correlation with orientation information; and a display unit 13 for displaying the prescribed information. The control unit 18 obtains the orientation information based on the digital signal and the data table. In a navigation mode, the sampling period of the magnetic sensors 14a, 14b is set as T1, and resolution of A/D conversion is set as B1.
