The assembly to polish the surfaces of a paper or cardboard web (1), at a papermaking or finishing machine, has a gap between a polishing roller (3) and a counter roller (4). The polishing roller has a rotating and flexible roller mantle (5), pressed against the counter roller by a static hydraulic press unit (6), with lubrication between it and the roller mantle. On a leakage of the lubricant through the roller mantle, an impermeable sealing web (10) is wound around it over its whole width.
