[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XL] In impulse - transmitting apparatus for sending a predetermined code signal, the code elements are mounted helically on a rotating drum which moves axially during its rotation and is restored by axial movement only. In the drum 5 shown, the helix has seven turns each containing six groups 58 of cam members so that during seven rotations of the drum, 42 Baudot-code signals may be transmitted. On energization of a magnet N, the movement of its armature 25 permits spring 16 to rotate a pivoted arm 17 which through a projection 17<1> moves also a further arm 22. The latter, which is latched by pawl 18, frees a member 32 on a rocking fork 35 which then by means of pins 34 moves a clutch disc 40 on the shaft of drum 5 into engagement with a driven disc 39. At the same time, arms 14, 15 are moved, causing knife members 11a, 11b and a projection on arm 14 to be inserted in the groove of the helix so as to produce axial movement of the drum during rotation, Near the end of the seventh revolution, a projection on the drum causes members 11a, 11b to be withdrawn but a projection 54 hooks behind a fixed projection until the revolution is complete. The drum is then restored axially to normal by springs attached to members 50, 60 and extending through the drum. Cam-controlled off-normal springs are provided. The cam teeth of the code elements are inclined so that the impulse-controlling spring 61 slides smoothly, and may be formed with lateral slots so as to be easily broken off to form any desired code. The drum shaft 37 is removably held in its bearings by a clip fastening. Several different code signals may be transmitted from a single instrument. |
