<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed to prevent cleaning failure caused by the contact operation or separation operation performed for developer carriers and corresponding image carriers. <P>SOLUTION: The contact operations for the image carriers 1 and the corresponding developer carriers 11 are performed in order from the upstream side in the direction of the movement of a transfer material conveying means 8.
