<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the number of icons to be displayed appropriately so that visibility of a map and convenience do not deteriorate when icons overlap. <P>SOLUTION: An icon control table 17 of the map information providing system 10 stores in advance a display control table 18 and a display control record 19 for regulating which category of icons are displayed every display level (reduced scale level) of a mesh file and which category of icons are not displayed.
