<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire a character image indicating a desired line width character from a character image indicative of a handwritten character. <P>SOLUTION: In a line width adjusting part 81 achieved by a computer, a line width altered image acquiring part 84 acquires a line width altered image expanded in a character region in a character image indicative of a handwritten character, and a line width acquiring part 83 substantially acquires a character line width from a line width altered image. A line width alteration management part 82 gradually increases a degree of the expansion of the character image until the line width of the character becomes a desired one, while there are repeated the processing in the line width altered image acquiring part 84 and the processing in the line width acquiring part 83.
