<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for estimating the band width which is available on a packet network. <P>SOLUTION: The band width available on the packet network such as the Internet can be calculated from dispersion of residence-time distribution of packets which are transmitted via the network by approximating the network by the M/M/1 queuing model. Since the dispersion of the residence-time distribution is calculated and the band width of the packet network which can be used for packet transport from input to output is calculated according to it, a probe train of N pieces of packets with known intervals between packets is injected from the input of the transmitter's side of the network. Though the residence time of individual packet passing though the network can not be directly measured on the receiver's side of the network, dispersion of the residence-time distribution of packets passing through the network can be calculated by using their time difference. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
