PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus wherein a scanning direction and the like can be freely changed when an image is displayed on an image display medium using electrodes of a simple matrix structure. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus 10 is constituted of the image display medium 15, a driving device 28 and a control device 30. The control device 30 outputs addressing data for designating scanning order and an image data to the driving device 28. A data extracting part 68 sequentially extracts column number designation data from the addressing data and outputs the column number designation data to a conversion part 66 and sequentially extracts column data of a column designated by the column number designation data from the image data and outputs the resultant data to a conversion part 62. A plurality of columns can be designated to the column number designation data, the conversion part 66 outputs column numbers of all columns designated by the column number designation data to a second electrode driving circuit 56 and the conversion part 62 outputs row numbers corresponding to the positions of the bits being turned on by the column data of the columns designated by the column number designation data to a first electrode driving circuit 55.
