PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for analyzing PM (particulate matter) in engine exhaust gases and capable of separately identifying and easily and accurately measuring even a small amount of dry soot, SOF, and sulfate in particulate matter contained in the engine exhaust gases. SOLUTION: A filter 2, which has collected particulate matter contained in engine exhaust gases G, is provided for the inside of a heating furnace 1. While an inert gas is made flow into the heating furnace 1, the filter 2 is heated at a prescribed temperature, to evaporate hydrocarbons and sulfates in the particulate matter and oxidize evaporated hydrocarbons into CO<SB>2</SB>and reduce evaporated sulfates into SO<SB>2</SB>. The CO<SB>2</SB>and the SO<SB>2</SB>are analyzed in a gas analyzing part 15. After this, while oxygen is made flow into the heating furnace 1, the filter 2 is heated to oxidize particulate matter remaining on the filter 2 and to generate CO<SB>2</SB>. The CO<SB>2</SB>is analyzed at the gas analyzing part 15. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
