PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and quick method detecting the diameter and/or the cross-sectional dimension of a rod-like goods in tobacco processing industries. SOLUTION: The present device is improved by installing a large number, particularly more than three, of the illuminants 12 emitting linear light 14 toward the goods 10, a sensor 17 receiving the light 19 scattered at the surface of goods for each illuminant 12, and an evaluating unit evaluating the measured signals of those sensors.
