The invention relates to a method for the temporal animation of an avatar in a virtual environment. Said method comprises a step for the reception of a source signal (31) containing behaviour markers (222) and branching information (223) associated with said markers, and a branching step (35) for orienting each marker (222) towards an animation module selected from a plurality of animation modules (25 to N), according to said branching information, each animation module using an animation language, in such a way that said at least two animation modules operate in parallel in order to animate the avatar together.
