PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing capable of analyzing not contrast but luminance distribution or color distribution of the whole or a part of an image to be photographed, thereby controlling the distance of an image forming face of a lens. SOLUTION: In the automatic focusing method of a camera having a luminance measurement means or a color density measurement means, a photometric means, a lens transfer driving means for adjusting image forming distance of the lens to the image forming face, an electronic imaging means and an arithmetic means on the imaging face, luminance or color density of the whole image of a finder acquisition image or one or more partial images of the acquired image is measured by a luminance measurement means and focal control of the lens transfer driving means is performed based on a distribution analysis value obtained by analyzing distribution of the measured luminance or the color density.
