PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element of longevity which is superior in emission luminance and emission efficiency and can maintain these elements' properties at a high level over a long period of time, and to provide a method of manufacturing the organic EL element. SOLUTION: The organic EL element for solving the above mentioned problem comprises a substrate, a first electrode layer and a second electrode layer arranged so as to mutually face to 1 side of the substrate, and a light emitting layer arranged between these electrode layers. Either one of the first and second electrode layers is a hole implantation electrode layer, and another one is an electron implantation electrode layer. Between the light emitting layer and the electron implantation electrode layer, there is provided an organic thin film layer consisting of a depositable polar organic compound whose energy gap is 3.5 eV or more, and a coating thickness of the organic thin film layer is 0.1 to 4 nm.
