PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a coke oven which can suppress overheating of the upper space of a coke oven carbonizing chamber to suppress carbon deposition and can suppress generation of heat spots on an oven wall. SOLUTION: In a method comprising charging coal into the coke oven carbonizing chamber and dry distilling it, a medium calorie gas of 1,500-3,500 kcal/Nm<SP>3</SP>is used as a fuel gas introduced into the combustion chamber. The use of the medium calorie gas permits reduction of the amount of carbon deposited on the oven wall at the upper part of the carbonizing chamber and suppression of generation of heat spots on the oven wall.
