There are provided a 3-dimensional image data compression device, method, program, and recording medium for the program capable of effectively compressing a data amount and obtaining a decompressed 3-dimensional image with little distortion as compared to the conventional technique. A recording medium containing the compressed data of the 3-dimensional data is also provided. In the skin-off method, the cut edge is generated according to a texture distribution on the surface of the 3-dimensional image so as to minimize distortion of the 3-dimensional image reproduced from the compressed data. Geometrical information and optical information on the 3-dimensional image data are correlated to points in a 2-dimensional flat graphic according to the texture distribution on the surface of the 3-dimensional image so as to minimize distortion of the 3-dimensional image reproduced from the compressed data.
