<p>This invention provides a display element that has a simple member construction, can realize low-voltage drive, has high display contrast, and further has an excellent response speed. To this end, an electrolyte layer containing silver or a compound containing silver in its chemical structure is provided between opposed electrodes, and the drive and operation of the opposed electrodes are carried out so that silver is dissolved and precipitated.
