Process for operating an I.C. engine, especially a diesel engine with homogeneous fuel consumption, comprises acquiring the pressure, temperature, ion stream and output signal of an optical measuring principle as a function of the crank angle, obtaining a cylinder condition signal from these values, acquiring two cycle characteristic values from the conversion point of the injected fuel, the maximum pressure rise in the cylinder, combustion noise, start of combustion or combustion duration, comparing with theoretical values for the cycle characteristic values, calculating the deviation between the values, feeding to a controlling algorithm, and adjusting the time point of the fuel injection as an adjusting parameter and/or the inert gas amount in the cylinder to stabilize the combustion and/or minimize noise and exhaust gas emissions. Preferred Features: The cycle characteristic values are acquired either from the starting signal of a sensor using an acoustic, optical, electrical, thermodynamic or mechanical measuring principle, via a mathematical model or a combination of sensor-based or model-based projection.
|
