The device has a filter device (15) provided in a path of rays between a radiation device and a radiation detection unit and in the path of rays between the radiation device and another detection unit. The latter detection unit receives a part of the radiation scattered and/or reflected from a measuring surface and emitted from the radiation device, and emits a characteristic measuring signal for scattered and/or reflected radiation. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining the characteristics of the surface of the motor vehicle.
