The medical instrument has a housing (1) containing a pressure wave generator (4) and a transmission device (8), for supplying the unfocussed pressure waves to the treated biological tissue. The transmission device has a pressure chamber (12) with an inlet and an outlet, containing a liquid (14) into which the pressure waves are injected for transmission to a coupling membrane (16) at the pressure chamber outlet. An independent claim for a pressure wave transmission method is also included.
