An electrodeless fluorescent lamp lighting device comprises an electrodeless fluorescent lamp (1), an induction coil (2), and a high-frequency lighting circuit composed of an AC/DC converting circuit (5), a DC/AC converting circuit (6), a resonance load circuit (8), a control circuit (7), and a current detecting means (9). Control is effected so that the product fxI of the frequency f of the current flowing through the induction coil (2) and the effective value I of the current is above a predetermined value. As a result, even if metal is disposed near the electrodeless fluorescent lamp (1), the electrodeless fluorescent lamp (1) does not stay in a capacitive coupling discharge state and can be infallibly lit with inductive coupling discharge.
