Disclosed is a separator for electric double layer capacitors which is a porous film composed of an aromatic polyamide having a film thickness of 5-50 mum, a porosity of 30-80%, an air permeability of 5-300 second/100mL.in<2>, and a puncture strength per unit film thickness of not less than 50 mN/mum. The separator for electric double layer capacitors has sufficient heat resistance, mechanical strength and ion permeability. Also disclosed is an electric double layer capacitor using such a separator.
